Valentine’s Day is coming up shortly. What does that mean to you? Are you happily married or in a relationship where you will be celebrating that day in a special way with someone you love? Or are you alone and dreading the feeling of all the love and smiles surrounding you and knowing that it isn’t happening to or with you?

I recently read an article regarding “Love” and what it means to children. As they say, “out of the mouth of babes”. Their responses were wonderful. I will quote from “OC Family” some of these responses as well as some others. They are from children ages 6-9 years. Nothing has been changed or altered.

“Love is kisses and hugs. Love is your family. Love is laughing”; Love is when mommy packs my lunch. Daddy loves me when he helps my boo-boo. Love is my puppy licking me. I find Love everywhere”; “Love is marriage. Marriage is when they get together and have a family”; Love is when your heart feels warm. It is when someone in the world cares for you”; Love is getting a blanket and looking at the stars”; Love is when your Dad plays catch with you”; Just a simple smile could be Love”; Love is kissing my dog, Pearl on the forehead”; Love is hugging my parents when they’re sad”; Love is when my mom brushes my hair in the morning”; Love is people standing up for me”; Love is smelling the pasta my grandma makes”; Love is when my dog sleeps with me.”

These and others come from children in their simplistic and very real feelings. I hope that all of you have had similar emotions and feelings of “love”.

There is something you can do that will make you feel alive, needed and give you a warm glow all over. And most of all, LOVE! Volunteer! Go to a senior or nursing home or hospital. Take some of those inexpensive valentine cards that the children give to each other and sign your name. If you are going to a nursing home, watch the eyes and smiles of the people that are alone that day, when you hand out those silly little cards.

You will be bringing someone the remembrance of a day that may be long past where they were making someone else smile with love or put a smile on the face of a child that may be too ill to be exchanging those cards with their friends and teachers in school.

Today and every day is a day for love. Showing a little love to a stranger will make you happy and give you a warm glow inside. Isn’t that what love is all about?

With the struggles of everyday living and the problems in the world, this is the time when you want to help someone else. It can make you feel that life is worth living.

Are you trying to make ends meet and don’t know what to do? Believe it or not, you can make a good profit and help those people who are unfortunate and will lose their homes this year to foreclosure. You can help put a smile on those faces and show them that all is not lost.
